Welcoming a new baby into the world is an exciting and special time. As your baby grows, their body undergoes many changes. Osteopathy may provide a gentle, non-invasive approach to support your baby’s physical development. Our experienced osteopath may assess your baby’s movement, posture, and overall physical function in a calm and supportive environment.

Osteopathic care for babies and toddlers aims to provide gentle hands-on techniques to help release physical tension, address movement concerns, reduce discomfort, promote body symmetry, and encourage optimal physical function. Our osteopath may also provide education and advice on play-based exercises or at-home movement activities to help maintain or develop physical skills.

Osteopathic treatment for babies, infants, and toddlers only requires a light touch and gentle techniques using no more pressure than dressing or holding your child. We do NOT use any ‘cracking’ techniques or sudden movements.

Cranial osteopathy for babies involves subtly cradling and balancing your baby’s head, body and pelvis to feel for areas of restriction and imbalance.
Osteopaths are university trained government registered healthcare professionals. Our Osteopath at Alara has a special interest in and many years of experience working with babies and children.

What to Expect During Osteopathic Appointment for a Baby or Toddler

A welcoming environment

We aim to create a calm and relaxed setting with toys and books to make both the child and their parents feel at ease. Comprehensive case history. Our osteopath will ask a variety of questions about your child’s birth, daily routine, feeding, movement patterns and development to understand their physical patterns. At Alara Kids, we take the time to listen to your concerns and provide an assessment tailored to your child’s individual needs.

A whole-body approach to assessment

We take a whole-body approach when assessing movement and physical function, which may include:
  • General movement and coordination
  • Postural variations as children grow
  • Musculoskeletal factors such as joint mobility and soft tissue tension
  • The relationship between muscles, bones, nerves, and circulation
For babies and younger children, osteopaths may also review:
  • Head and neck mobility
  • Muscle tone and symmetry
  • Hip and limb movement
  • Latch and feeding mechanics
  • Milestone-related movement patterns

Gentle, subtle hands-on approach

We aim to facilitate healthy function in growing bodies by freeing up muscles and joints, improving blood flow and maintaining body symmetry. When working with babies and toddlers our Osteopath will only use gentle non-invasive techniques tailored to your baby’s specific needs and developmental stage.

Advice and education

Our osteopath may also provide education and advice on play-based exercises or at-home movement activities to help maintain or develop physical skills.
